'Lydia Braniff lifts All Ireland
title'
Belfast’s
Pocket Dragon sent out a message to Europe’s kickboxing ladies
with an emphatic victory in her Irish title bout on Saturday night.
The diminutive battler knocked out Waterford’s Lynn McEnery
in the fourth round of their title fight,
snatching the belt and stunning the Waterford crowd.
"I'm so pleased at the result and the nature of the win,"
said the Atomweight. "I’ve had two wins back to back
in recent weeks and really felt my game was coming together. Lynn
came at me like a whirlwind for two rounds, but I’m gaining
in experience and I knew how to work the bout to get the victory.
There’s plenty more to come. Now, I’m going to start
looking for a British title."
Braniff won with a deadly right-hook in the fourth – a punch
she had been working all night – and left her coach delighted.
"She was terrific in there," said Billy Murray of ProKick.
"She looked strong, she boxed with precision and power and
her kicking really came together too.
It’s ironic that she caught McEnery with the same sort of
punch that Reid un-wrapped to leave Magee on the canvas in Belfast.
There is much more to come from Lydia."
The
fight was on the undercard of the ‘King of The Middleweights’
winner-takes-all knock-out competition.
Scotland’s Chris Carlow was the surprise winner of the eight
man competition, seeing off pre-event favourites Ken Horan and Ruairi
Bourke.
Derry's super welterweight Aaron Mc Carron also picked up an Irish
title by beating Paddy Burke of Waterford on points.
The event was promoted by Billy O’Sullivan, the grand-daddy
of Irish kickboxing.
